We’ve had a lot of people ask us about the name we chose for our band. I thought I’d write a post describing our name and why we chose it. Also at the end of this post you probably may realize that I’m a bigger geek than any could truly anticipate. The name stems for the beginning of the minimalist movement. This movement started in San Francisco in the 1950’s and 60’s by the likes of LaMont Young and Terry Riley. Minimalism for those who are unware, is music that has one idea the basically repeats over and over again. The most famous minimalist in popular culture would probably be Philip Glass, who has written some very nice scores for popular movies like candyman and the illusionist. Anyways, during the same time that the Americans were creating minimalism a Hungarian composer by the name of Ligeti was starting to do the same concepts without any contact with the American composers. He came up with two concepts that could be used in minimalism which is the idea of clocks and clouds. He shared how some music was more ethereal and longer with very, very slow changes in melody and chords, which represents clouds. The other music can be associated with a clock, which is very rhythmic and precise in nature. Ligeti even wrote a famous piece titled clocks and clouds in which he shows these two concepts. Since our band uses a loop pedal from time to time our music has some minimalistic qualities. However, this quality has become looser and looser as we’ve progressed and written away from over using the loop pedal. The name stuck and seemed to fit our needs of also combining classical and rock and roll together.
Again I apologize for the music history lesson you just received. For the future, if you do talk to me about music history I will literally talk your ear off. I also don’t have a filter for when to stop said conversation. This is your warning and I now have no obligation to feeling bad if you got into a conversation you wish never started.
